Post

Stop messing with my childhood!

So last night I was browsing the Internet and saw something that made me cringe. I saw that there would be a live film adaption of the fairly oddparents. Now this brought me to a conclusion. Hollywood has run out of ideas. That and they enjoy ruining great cartoons, by making them into shitty live action movies. But obviously one issue is a bit more pressing than the other.

The film industry is pretty bare on ideas. Now I understand there are plenty of good films each year, but I am speaking purely on behalf of the big studios. I am talking about how each summer we have a big sequel, or comic book adaption. Summer blockbusters have gotten a bit stale these past few years, I mean this summer I have seen 2 films. Now although those were great I am left wondering, what else is there to see? In the next two years we have 7 comic book adaptions coming out, and above 15 sequels. I am hyped about many of these as a geek. But as a true lover of movies, I want something different. I am tired of the same action movies that don’t even fulfill the summer blockbuster expectation.

Hollywood may soon find out the general public is also getting a bit tired of the boring same ideas. As seen this year, ticket sales are way down. I will use Iron Man 2 as an example. This movie was obviously highly anticipated after the first one. It made less than the first one. Now whether this is a reflection of the dip in quality or the sequelitis is up to speculation. The word of mouth will carry a movie, as seen in Inception. Hollywood is struggling to find a way to connect with the audience. I believe the disappointing box office numbers shown by many of the films this year is displaying their disconnection.

We will see what happens in the movie industry in the next few years. Although it is hard not to get excited about some sequels, it is honestly getting old. This year and last year were both very weak for summer blockbusters. Great movies come regardless though as shown by Inception, Toy Story 3, and Shutter Island. But for everyone of those we get even more terrible movies, such as The Last Airbender (maybe not that bad). Let us hope the dreadful movies bomb at the box office. That way film makers will realize people (sometimes) don’t settle for garbage.

If you need further evidence of ugly adaptions, look up the Yogi Bear trailer that was just released today. Christ.
